Showbiz update: Queens, Princesses and the King! Jenny Priestly brings us a royal portion of gossip on an Elvis biopic, plus Brad and Angelina to co-star in their first film since Mr and Mrs Smith.
Natalie Cole is to make her Broadway debut as she joins the cast of musical, After Midnight. The singer is the latest in a long line of stars to sign up for appearances in the show, KD Lang and Vanessa Williams have already appeared. Cole will join the show later this summer following guest stints from Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight. The show, which is set during the Jazz Age, has picked up seven prestigious Tony Award nominations.
New entries in the Princess Diaries
If you have kids who love the Princess Diaries books (or even if you do) then good news: author Meg Cabot is to publish a new instalment next summer. The new book, called Royal Wedding, will celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary and will have a more adult theme to reflect the fact that lead character Mia (and a lot of readers) is now all grown up. One thing I didn’t know about these books, they differ from the films starring Anne Hathaway. In the films Mia’s father is dead but in the books he’s alive and well and ruling Genovia. In the new book a scheming policeman is trying to topple Mia’s father from the throne.
Queen Latifah to take on new acting role
Queen Latifah is to star in a new HBO film about blues singer Bessie Smith. The film chronicles how Smith overcame her tempestuous personal life to become one of the most acclaimed performing and recording artists of the 1920s and ’30s. Look out for filming details and release dates.
Is Elvis returning to the building?
Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is in talks to bring the life of Elvis to the big screen. The Great Gatsby director is in talks to make the movie which has been written by British screenwriter Kelly Marcal, she wrote Saving Mr Banks and the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Apparently the film won’t be based on any pre-existing material so it should be a whole new take on the iconic singer’s life. No word yet on who will play Elvis – who would be your choice?
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie look set to co-star with one another for the first time since 2005’s Mr and Mrs Smith. Not a lot is known about the new project yet although it’s believed Angie has written it. The couple have both been busy working on separate projects recently with Angie directing a new film about a Second World War POW and Brad starring in a film set during the same era. Both films are due out in time for awards season so expect to see the genetically gifted couple gracing a number of red carpets.
The new big thing for US TV networks at the moment seems to be staging live performances of classic movie musicals. Last year, NBC broadcast The Sound of Music and will be following it up with Peter Pan live this winter. Now Fox have announced they want to stage a live performance of Grease next year. No news yet on who’ll be playing Sandy and Danny.
