Oscar Nominations, Star Wars and the new San Andreas trailer…

Plus more entertainment news from Jenny Priestley.

George ClooneyGeorge Clooney is working on a new TV series set at a Hollywood film studio during the 1990s. Apparently it’s a dark comedy looking at the movie business through the eyes of the studio bosses running the studio. At the moment Clooney is in talks with various TV networks but I would expect them to jump at the chance to work with the Oscar winner. Clooney will be producing the show but we don’t know at this stage if he’ll appear in the series.

Stephen Fry has been confirmed as the host of the BAFTA Film Awards in February. It’ll be his 10th time as host of the awards.

Maureen Lipman is joining James Dreyfus in the new stage production of Harvey. The play opens at Birmingham Rep on February 6 before touring the country ahead of a West End transfer. Lipman will play Veta, who tries to get her brother, Elwood P. Dowd (Dreyfus) committed rather than risk the family’s reputation.

This week…

It’s been announced that the second series of Broadchurch will begin on ITV on January 5. I was absolutely hooked by the first series, I thought it was a brilliant drama, even if we did all guess whodunnit! Well now there!… more good news for fans as a series of digital short stories tied into each episode of the new series are being released. Each e-book will be released at midnight following the Monday night episode and will include characters featured in that night’s episode, delving deeper into their lives. I think this is a brilliant idea!

Coldplay, Lorde, Glen Campbell, John Legend and Patti Smith could be among this year’s Oscar nominees. They’ve been included in the 79 songs deemed eligible to compete for the five nomination slots. Other possible nominees include Liza Minnelli, Adam Levine, Keira Knightley and Russell Crowe.

Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter from McBusted will be out and about this week signing copies of their children’s book. The duo will be at Waterstones in Bluewater on December 16 and at the Reading store on December 18. They’re promoting their book ‘The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas’. Lovely!

James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones will be honoured by the American Theatre Wing next year. The veteran actor will be feted at the organisation’s annual gala on September 28 in New York. “James Earl Jones has continually championed the American theatre with his memorable performances and advocacy on behalf of the Wing,” said American Theatre Wing President Heather Hitchens in a statement. “He embodies the definition of a working actor, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to honour and pay tribute to all that he has done to elevate the art form.”

Are you one of the 47 million people who have watched the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Well now some of the names of the characters unveiled in the trailer have been revealed. First of all the little droid seen rolling through shot is called BB-8. The X-Wing pilot played by Oscar Issac is Poe Dameron. John Boeyga is Finn and Daisy Ridley is Rey. Finally the mysterious figure with the light sabre that sent the Internet into meltdown is Kylo Ren – but we still don’t know who’s playing him/her. I find it intriguing that we’re not being told Finn or Rey’s surnames…

Rumours abound Simon Cowell could be heading back to US TV. Apparently the Fox network is really keen to work with him again and bosses have been in London recently to discuss ideas. Cowell rose to fame on American Idol for Fox before leaving to launch The X Factor USA, also on Fox. No word yet on what kind of project bosses want him for.

This weeks trailers…

Two big new trailers this week. First, San Andreas starring Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock), Paul Giamatti and Archie Panjabi from The Good Wife. It’s a disaster flick about a search and rescue helicopter pilot who has to make his way from LA to San Francisco to rescue his daughter after a huge earthquake. The film’s due to be released in May.

We also have the first official trailer for Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent, starring Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet. It’s due in UK cinemas on March 20.
