‘Memphis’ The Musical: Angie speaks with Beverley Knight

beverley-knight

1950s Memphis; segregation and racism was at its height, but music (the legal drug) took away the “sting” of negativity at that time. Underground night clubs where the place to be, with dancing and undiscovered entertainers, and also the only place to hear gospel, roots, soul and blues.

The Radio stations didn’t offer jobs to black DJs and definitely didn’t feature soul music.

Enter Huey Calhoun, a fun loving white DJ whose thirst for roots, soul, gospel and blues leads him to an underground night club and eventually the arms of sweet singing Felicia.

Remember, this is 1950s Memphis and mixed relationships were illegal but the love of music creates illegal unity and success in doing so.

Listen to Beverley Knight talk passionately about ‘Memphis’ the Musical and her acting career.
