I can’t express how passionate I am about my book club Angie’s Book Club (ABC). I love delving into the minds of authors who sit in an assigned space, write stories, share experiences and let their minds go wild, and from that space, their writings then resonate with people all over the world. It’s amazing and it’s fabulous.
Our first season – available now on YouTube – profiled Soul Survivor by PP Arnold. The title couldn’t be more true of PP as her book details her personal life, as well as her professional life as an Ikette singing with Ike and Tina Turner.
As a young mother Patricia felt obligated to remain in a marriage out of duty and not love, but a chance meeting whilst out supporting friends at a singing audition changed her life.
On a personal level, she’s very open about family life with her husband, her children and also personal loss. On a professional level, she details her friendship with Tina Turner and doesn’t water down her feelings towards Ike, how he treated the band and the Ikettes and how he treated Tina.
Timing is key to me and I’m so pleased I spoke with Pat well before Tina died. This wasn’t a “jumping on the band wagon” interview and I know PP would love to meet again to share more of her love for Tina and some time they shared together during Tina’s illness.
Still touring, still recording, still writing, PP and I will sit down again to talk Soul Survivor. The paper back is due out 28th September 2023.
Angie’s Book Club #ABC Season 2 launches Thursday 28 September too with Angie Thomas’ Nik Blake And The Remarkables. I’ve got so much time for my name sake Angie. Her debut book, The Hate You Give, was so on time its film rights were immediately picked up and the film was distributed by 20th Century Studios. It also starred great Black talent including actresses Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Issa Rae and the rapper Common. Her latest book, Nik Blake, touches on a young black girl, totally in sync with her father and she uses her ‘super powers’ to do all she can to prove he is innocent of a crime he didn’t commit.
