They have to cook on their own. Perhaps for the first time ever they’re responsible for feeding themselves completely. No more Mum making sure they eat healthy or making sure they don’t eat too much junk.
Are you certain they know how to do this? Students have one area that presents them with a greater challenge than most others face, and that’s eating well. It can be pretty darn hard to eat well as a college/uni student.
University just seems to throw up a lot of roadblocks to healthy eating that non-students don’t seem to have to deal with, including super-tight budgets, lack of cooking tools, and ridiculously busy schedules.
The focus needs to be on eating well in the best way you can, not on being perfect. It’s almost impossible for anyone to stick to their diet 100% of the time.
I recently came across this amazing Facebook page Unibites which incorporates some fabulous ideas for Uni students to eat healthy AND well on a Uni budget.
UniBites is the brainchild of Lyle Willis-Blackwood and his colleague Sam Lam who are students at St Mary’s Twickenham University. Both Lyle and Sam are Nutrition students, whilst Lyle is a keen cook, Sam is a filming enthusiast, so they combined their interests to create a cooking tutorial channel targeted towards university students. The three important factors of UniBites are : time, cost and health whilst not sacrificing taste.
These 1 minute videos will inspire students to recreate traditional home recipes but will also set challenges by attempting different cuisines. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan or experience food intolerances there is a recipe for you on UniBites.
As parents we attempt to give our children the best life skills possible so that when they do leave home to study, we can rest assured (hopefully) that they take those skills with them. Food and health is such an important area not only of their physical health, but also their mental health and our children need to remain mentally active in order to pass those all important exams. It’s fulfilling to know that, in this case, those skills are being embraced.
Most students have enough to deal with having left home, there is then the transition of accepting that they will become the head of their own home whilst studying. In conjunction there is the act of financially balancing their funds in order to live a straight forward, stress free and healthy life.
