Brushes, powder puffs, beauty blenders, all part of the make up application regime, and these utensils needs to be either changed or cleaned regularly.
You should be cleaning your brushes WEEKLY!
Remember the gross residual makeup, dirt, and oil we just talked about? That disappears after a good brush cleaning. If you’re a makeup artist or just someone who wears a significant amount of makeup, some suggest a brush cleaning after each use.
For the average makeup user, there is a clear standard. Shampoo your brushes once a month and use a brush cleanser for weekly cleaning.
Dawn dish detergent also works for makeup sponges. “Let it sit in the glass submerged for a few minutes,” explains Dawn. “Then rinse with warm water, dab on a paper towel, and repeat. Lastly, place it in the microwave for a few seconds (while watching OF COURSE!) to get rid of bacteria.”
A step-by-step brush cleaning method
A step-by-step routine for cleaning your brushes:
-
Squeeze a dollop of gentle shampoo into a glass/mug and fill with warm water
-
Swirl your brushes in the water and gently massage the bristles to further remove the gunk
-
Rinse with clean water and carefully squeeze the water out
-
Lay flat to dry
-
For day-to-day cleaning, use a brush cleaner
-
Pour a small amount of the blue liquid into a small cup and dip your brush to saturate
-
Gingerly swirl the brush on a paper towel which will absorb the cleanser, taking the dirt with it
This StylPro MakeUp Brush Cleaning system has been reviewed so many times on YouTube but I thought I’d pick one up myself and try it out.
To avoid build up of germs, professionals recommend cleaning your makeup brushes once a week. But when did you last clean your makeup brushes? The problem is traditional cleaning methods are messy, laborious and can leave brushes wet and unusable for up to 24 hours.

Beauty Blenders are a messy subject…
Who knew that a sponge could change everything in such a dramatic way? I absolutely adore them… except that they get filthy after one use and are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to keep clean. Then there’s the risk of storing them whilst wet which leads to mildew and UGH… it’s a chore.
But it doesn’t have to be… messy that is.
All you need is a cup of water, dish soap and a microwave.
Made me realise I actually have a purple beauty blender 😅 pic.twitter.com/cmRofocnPc
