The best advice from Mum

There really is nothing like a mum’s words of wisdom, whether we ask for it or not. If it wasn’t for my own Mum’s wise words, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

A Mum’s pearls of wisdom can come in many forms: life-affirming, soul-replenishing, well-meaning, intrusive, practical, and sometimes, passed over in favour of ‘thanksMum but I know already. Geeze.’ When will we ever learn that Mums are almost ALWAYS right?

I asked our readers for the best piece of advice from their Mum, in honor of Mother’s Day. Most of these are extremely practical and some are just downright funny (giving birth is like passing a watermelon!) .

Ian C  Mum’s best advice was never to look down on anyone unless you’re helping them up ?

Adele K  She always said, If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours  ?

Kristy B  To love and laugh and let go – friendships change and that is ok but don’t hold onto to something not needed

Kerryanne A  My nanna who raised us all always told us to use our manners as they are the most valuable and leave a lasting impression, they are also Free!

Steph m  Treat others the way you wish to be treated with kindness, respect and dignity ??????????????

sharon m  It is better to be looked over than overlooked

Donna C  I’m currently pregnant with my first and my 80 year old Nan tells me not to worry because childbirth is just like pushing out a watermelon!!! ?

Christine C  My Mum always says ‘If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all’

Eleanor B  Keep your hand on your ha’penny !!!

Maureen Q  I remember my husband’s gran telling me that if you can get your child to understand no by the time they are 1 it will make life so much easier – proved true

What are your best pieces of advice from your Mum? Do you find yourself saying things your Mum said to you to your kids? I’d love to hear about it on  Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

This Sunday on Mother’s Day I’ll be doing a Facebook Live at 1:00 PM to talk about “What it means to be a Mum”. Come share your little pearls of wisdom and join the discussion!
