Royal Festival Hall Sunday 5th May and as I walk along the South Bank around 2pm I hear the sweet sounds of choirs singing. Choirs from the UK – London, Manchester and Oxford. Choirs from Europe – Italy, Sweden and Ireland.
Voices are being warmed up for the event at the Hall, the highlight which is the London Community Gospel Choir’s 30th anniversary. The choir have been sharing their voices, their faith and their stories for 3 decades and this night of celebrations is hosted by yours truly!!
Joining them for evening is singer Jocelyn Brown who belted out “Fill My Cup” alongside Founder Member of LCGC Bazil Meade. Jahmene Douglas sang his take on Emeli Sande’s “Next To Me” and you could hear a pin drop in between his crystal clear notes.
Bazil Meade reminisced with stories and songs that the choir had sung over the years, and it was also good to see that the next generation of singers was being prepared to take the stage as the Children’s Choir opened the stage and raised the roof!!
The highlight of the evening had to be all the choirs in the venue, together with audience members creating a mass choir to break the world record for the largest choir in one venue singing a rendition of the Edwin Hawkins Singer’s “Oh Happy Day”. Minus 37 people filming, and a few doing more dancing than singing(!), the world record was achieved – 1,169 people were recorded by the Guiness Book of Records Officials. A new world record was set.
Well done LCGC, we look forward to the next 30 years.
